Check ICE Detention Custody

To find someone released from the ICE detention system after a Shelby County case, begin with the county movement record and then follow the named federal custodian. No ICE detention facility was verified inside Shelby County, Missouri. ICE becomes relevant only when an individual record shows an immigration detainer, handoff, or separate detention event. The online locator can cover current detention and a limited recent-release period, but it is not a permanent archive. Accurate verification separates a request to hold someone from an actual transfer, and it separates release from ICE custody from removal or custody by another agency.

ICE Detention System Scope

No ICE detention center was verified as physically located in Shelby County. The ICE detention system belongs in the county custody map because a person can leave the Shelby County Jail through a documented federal handoff. It should not be presented as a local roster or as the default destination after every county arrest.

Start with the custodian the person actually left. The Shelby County Sheriff maintains the county booking and movement event. ICE maintains its detention record. A county court file can explain the local charge or release authority but does not prove that ICE accepted custody. Each record has a separate role.

System boundary. Leaving Shelby County Jail for ICE is a transfer between custodians, not proof of community release or removal.

Search the ICE Detention System

The ICE Online Detainee Locator System, or ODLS, covers current ICE detention and certain recent releases. Search with the most reliable identifiers available. A missing result is inconclusive because spellings, data timing, age restrictions, and the locator’s time boundary can affect what appears.

  1. Obtain the Shelby County movement entry and confirm that ICE is named as the receiving agency.
  2. Search ODLS by the nine-digit A-number and country of birth when the A-number is available.
  3. Otherwise enter the exact first and last name with country of birth. Add birth date when available to narrow the match.
  4. Compare all returned identifiers before selecting a record. Preserve the exact status wording and query time.
  5. If ODLS does not resolve the question, contact the Detention Reporting and Information Line at 1-888-351-4024.
  6. For an older or disputed event, request the relevant records rather than treating locator silence as a release result.

The Shelby County release verification path explains how the sheriff movement entry, court authority, and receiving-custodian record work as one packet.

ICE Custody Search Fields

ODLS supports two identity routes. The A-number route needs a nine-digit immigration number and country of birth. The name route needs exact first and last name with country of birth, and it can use date of birth. These are search inputs, not a complete release certificate.

Search fieldHow to use it
A-numberEnter the nine-digit number when available; preserve leading zeroes as required by the interface.
Country of birthRequired with either the A-number or exact-name search path.
First and last nameUse exact spelling and test documented variants when the A-number is unknown.
Date of birthUse as an optional name-search field to reduce mistaken identity.
Status wordingRecord the precise result rather than summarizing it as freedom from all custody.
Query date and timeShows when the time-limited locator result was observed.

ODLS does not replace the Shelby sheriff’s release or transfer entry. The county record proves what happened at the county boundary. The ICE result addresses the later federal custody stage.

ICE Recent Release Boundary

ICE states that ODLS includes people currently detained and people released from ICE custody during roughly the preceding 60 days. That recent period can help trace a second release after a county-to-ICE transfer. It is not a permanent historical archive, and a person outside the window may no longer appear.

A no-result after that period does not prove the person was never detained or released. Save the exact result while it is available, then seek the underlying agency record when durable confirmation matters. Likewise, a result saying released from ICE answers only the ICE custody question. Another federal, state, or local authority could still have a separate basis for custody.

Note: The ODLS recent-release window is an access limit, not a measure of how long ICE records legally exist.

ICE Detainer or Actual Handoff

An immigration detainer is a request. ICE asks another custodian for notice and may request that the person remain held for up to 48 hours beyond the otherwise applicable release time so ICE can assume custody. The detainer itself does not prove that ICE arrived, accepted the person, or later removed the person from the United States.

Ask the Shelby County Sheriff for the movement entry, actual transfer date and time, and receiving agency. If the entry names ICE, the accurate description is that the person left Shelby County custody for ICE custody. If ICE did not accept custody, the detainer cannot be treated as proof of a completed handoff.

The comparison matters in dismissed and bond cases. A Shelby court action may remove the local basis for detention while a valid, separate federal process affects the exit. The court order explains the county authority. The sheriff movement record and ICE record explain what happened next.

ICE Transfer Request Guidance

The official ICE immigration-detainer guidance explains the notice and limited hold request that can precede a transfer.

The capture documents the detainer framework, not any Shelby County person or completed transfer. An individual handoff still requires the sheriff’s movement record and ICE confirmation.

ICE Detention Contact Route

Use ODLS first for a supported individual search. If the online result is missing, unclear, or outside the recent-release period, the verified public contact in the research is the ICE Detention Reporting and Information Line.

Have the A-number, exact name, country of birth, birth date, and documented county transfer details available. Keep the Shelby sheriff contact separate: 573-633-2161 or scshrf@marktwain.net. The sheriff confirms the county movement; ICE confirms the federal detention stage.

ICE and Shelby Release Records

A strong county-to-ICE record packet has three parts. The Shelby sheriff’s booking or movement entry supplies the actual exit and receiver. Case.net supplies the bond, dismissal, sentence, warrant, or court order that explains the local legal event. ICE supplies the later detention or release status.

Request existing county records with the person’s identity, booking range, and case number. Ask for actual movement date and time, release type or authority, and the receiving agency. Missouri Chapter 610 governs access to county public records, subject to lawful closures and redactions. Ask for open portions and a cited legal basis for anything withheld.

For ICE, preserve the A-number, exact status, source URL, and access date. Do not describe a person as removed unless a proper immigration source establishes that separate event. A transfer, detention, release, and removal are four different facts.

ICE Detention Lookup Limits

Do not use the BOP locator for ICE civil detention. Do not use MOVANS as an ICE archive. MOVANS can alert on a local custody change, but it may not show the receiving federal system, and an offline local feed can produce no result. The sheriff’s movement field is the bridge between local and federal records.

Search silence can result from name differences, data delay, the recent-release cutoff, confidentiality rules, or use of the wrong custodian. Recheck identifiers and contact ICE. For an old case, request agency records rather than relying on snippets or a commercial directory.

No ICE facility address or local release desk should be inferred from a Shelby County case. The research verified no ICE detention location in the county. Follow only the receiver named in the individual record.

ICE Release and Removal Records

Release from ICE detention and removal from the United States are not interchangeable events. ODLS may show that ICE no longer detains a person within its recent period, but that result does not state every later legal or custody outcome. Removal requires its own reliable immigration source. Do not infer it from a county transfer, a detainer, or a missing locator result.

The same care applies to community release. A person can leave ICE for another custodian, and a person released from detention can remain subject to an immigration case. Record only the status the source provides. When the sequence begins in Shelby County, preserve the sheriff handoff entry, the ICE detention result, and the later ICE release record as separate events with separate dates.

This event-by-event method also supports corrections. If an agency changes a status or an identifier was mismatched, keep the source URL, access time, A-number or other identifiers used, and the exact corrected wording.
